Dave Roberts
Many longstanding Club members will be saddened to hear of the passing of former Club captain Dave Roberts. Dave was 79 and had fought a battle against Leukemia in recent years.
Dave joined the Club in the early 1980’s in his mid to late thirties. Having been a fine cricketer at Vauxhall Motors CC, Dave wanted to play and test himself at a higher level. He quickly established himself in the first team, bowling medium paced swing and seam with great control as well as being a more than useful middle order batsman. Dave became Club Captain in the late 1980’s and was a member of the Centennial sub-Committee organising the club’s celebrations in 1992
Slightly surprisingly Dave never played for the full Bedfordshire side but played age grade County cricket in his youth. He also played for Herts over 50’s before being recruited by Sussex over 50’s with whom he toured, with his wife Eileen, to many overseas locations. Dave was a fine all-round sportsman and in the 1970’s played semi-professional football for Barton Rovers.
In later years he played cricket for Eaton Bray and looked after their ground. He also developed a keen interest in horses and learnt to ride.
Dave also toured with the Club on a number of occasions, sometimes combining a work trip to join us in South Wales. Always a snappy dresser, he was definitely the only DTCC tourist ever to bring a trouser press on tour.
As well as a fine cricketer Dave will be fondly remembered as a man with a cheerful disposition and an ability to laugh at himself. Our sincere condolences go to Eileen.
Details of the funeral arrangements will be put on the website as soon as they are known.
